Grad School Work

These are several experiments and paths I followed while receiving my MFA from the Rhode Island School of Design. I wanted to create a record of them somewhere, because I think many of them are interesting and have the seeds of my Thesis and later work.

A vessel a day
(keeps the thesis advisors away.)

This project was a challenge in the fall of 2019 to only spend a single day on a piece before moving on (excluding glaze, obviously). The speed allowed me to pioneer forms and surfaces quickly.

Altered

Pedestal

(2020)

In order to combat the horizontal bias of my prior work, I decided to embrace a painterly technique. Instead of starting on a blank canvas, many painters will activate their canvas using a washy layer of paint. To translate this to ceramics, I decided to start building on top of (and eventually within) armatures that contrasted the final forms.

The Cubes

In the Fall of 2020, when my work seemed to be getting more and more complicated to finish, I decided on a back to basics approach, fragmenting my work into individual cubes. This allowed me more experimentation both within the cubes, and how they were arranged.
